As February unfolded, Windy Hill’s Resident Services team continued its commitment to creating engaging, inclusive experiences that support residents’ cognitive, social, and emotional well-being. Centered on connection, learning, and celebration, February’s programming strengthened memory skills, built confidence with technology, and helped residents feel appreciated through meaningful seasonal initiatives.
Through thoughtful programming, Resident Services focused on meeting residents where they are while fostering community and belonging. Expanding a cognitive engagement initiative launched earlier this year, the team introduced a new memory-based activity, “Name That Flag.” Designed to support elderly residents and young adults with disabilities, the program combines visual presentations with interactive discussion and friendly participation. Residents identified flags from around the world, recalled associated countries, and shared memories connected to travel, culture, or personal experiences. The activity promoted memory, recognition, and shared learning while strengthening social connections. Staff observed increased engagement, laughter, and conversation throughout the session. Samone Adams, a longtime resident of Levis Hill House, said, “What I enjoyed most was that it was something different than the usual activities. Coming together with community gives you an opportunity to learn more about those you’re in the community with. What I learned was how much I didn’t know about flags of the world. Not knowing became an opportunity for excitement to want to learn more.”
Resident Services also organized a culinary field trip to Oak Springs Garden Foundation’s farm for a hands-on experience titled Flowers & Chocolate. The outing offered an educational workshop blending culinary exploration with artistic expression. Residents participated in a chocolate taste test, made chocolate-covered fruit, created floral tussie mussies, and designed pressed flower coasters. The experience encouraged creativity, sensory engagement, and social interaction while providing a refreshing change of scenery. Resident Heather Reed, shared, “The event was a fun educational night learning about chocolate and flowers. It was nice to see new faces and chat about people’s life experiences. I enjoyed the whole event but my most favorite thing was making the flower coaster. It was a great time to show off my creativity.” The field trip highlighted the value of experiential learning and community-building, leaving residents inspired and connected.
In the spirit of the season, Resident Services hosted a Valentine’s Lunch Box initiative to spread warmth and appreciation throughout the community. Residents received thoughtfully prepared lunch boxes as a gesture of care and connection, so our residents feel valued and supported. Wakefield School also gifted Levis Hill House senior residents with handmade Valentine’s cards, adding a personal touch and strengthening bonds within the wider community.
To further support independence, Resident Services offered a Tablet 101 session to build confidence with technology. The workshop covered tablet basics, including powering the device on and off, navigating features, and understanding common functions. Hands-on guidance reduced barriers to technology use and empowered residents to engage more independently with digital tools. Participants appreciated the supportive environment and the opportunity to ask questions at their own pace.
Together, February’s initiatives reflect Windy Hill’s ongoing dedication to fostering cognitive engagement, social connection, and responsive support. Through interactive activities, seasonal outreach, and educational opportunities, Resident Services continues to cultivate an environment where residents feel connected, empowered, and supported year-round.
